Please tell us about your journey toward applying to Baylor's JPR&NM graduate program.
I studied marketing and entrepreneurship in my BBA at Baylor. I have a passion for both small businesses and a good story and began to see how compelling marketing campaigns can lead to enriching the value of a small business or brand.
I tried to find work with a marketing agency before I took a turn and got a job in a small retail company in Austin, Texas. After learning the operations of that business and with the uncertainty of the retail industry looming overhead, I decided to go back to school to better understand communications and advertising. The technical rigor of a journalism program is what drew me to research the degree. With my past experience at Baylor, and the experiences of friends in the journalism department, Baylor was a no-brainer to consider.
What has particularly attracted you to Baylor’s JPR&NM graduate program?
Seeing how better prepared some of my undergraduate friends were for the field of marketing was a big draw, and the few interactions I had with the department prior to joining the MA program were reassuring to me. Now that I am three weeks into the program, I know that I will be better set up for the career I want.
What are your long-term goals?
I want to combine my passions for small business & storytelling and work within a full-service marketing agency. I would love to own a business of my own one day after that, but the ideas come and go so often that I cannot just pick one to focus on developing.
Your favorite part about being a grad student in this program:
My short time with the program so far has introduced me to a very caring and talented teaching staff. I have enjoyed my time in the classroom so far and look forward to two years of this department!
Advice to students interested in joining the JPRNM program:
There is not a better time to go back to school than now. To have the security of school during this time of unknowns is nice but knowing that I will be better-prepared to enter the professional workforce after graduation is a motivating factor that I do not take lightly.
